THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS  - MUNICH ART GALLERY DURING SCHMUCK 2025 - Thursday 13 - 16 March 2025:

THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS by ANNETTE DAM & MARIE LOUISE KRISTENSEN

During SCHMUCK Munich, which has existed since 1959, and the parallel MUNICH JEWELLERY WEEK, we will be showcasing two strong female positions in Danish jewelry art: ANNETTE DAM and MARIE LOUIE KRISTENSEN.

The exhibition was organized and curated by Munich goldsmith and jewelry artist SARAH COSHAM.

ANNETTE DAM
For Annette Dam, creating jewelry often feels like a puzzle that she desperately wants to solve – visualizing and materializing abstract thoughts into wearable pieces of jewelry becomes an investigative ping-pong between ideas, material compositions, and her own craftsmanship.

There are several ways to interpret Annette Dam's brooches and the artist finds it perfectly fine to develop one's own personal perspective on her jewelry.

“With my jewelry, I bring thoughts about values in general into physical form, from personal starting points to general observations about the world I live in.”

Danish-born Annette Dam studied at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts in Norway in 1999 and has since then worked conceptually and exhibition-oriented. In 2015, she was selected for the World Craft Council's European Award for Applied Arts in Belgium and received the prestigious St. Loye Prize from Kjøbenhavns Guldsmedelaug.

MARIE LOUISE KRISTENSEN
Jewelry is an intimate art form, and Marie-Louise Kristensen's jewelry invites us to take a closer look. She is the ultimate storyteller in contemporary Danish jewelry.

Her brooches and rings can be considered tableaux: an arrangement of different figures and objects made of different materials, both precious and base.

The titles of her works are a story in themselves. They reveal Kristensen's sense of humor. Perhaps her approach to jewelry making has more in common with that of a cartoonist than with the way classical designers or goldsmiths are trained—like a cartoonist, she takes a situation and magnifies and clarifies it. Even though her tone can be critical, it is always imbued with a certain warmth and relatability.

SILVER LINING - FRIENDLY TAKEOVER AT SPECTA GALLERY  - Friday 12 - 16 June 2024:

SILVER LINING presents selected works within jewelery art and corpus objects as well as mixtures thereof. The works represent a further development, unique transformation or paraphrase of classical design within these genres. Beyond their threads to traditional craft and design, the works offer reflective layers and new perspectives on today's society.

SILVER LINING shows works from 15 Danish and internationally recognized artists, each of whom explores and challenges the norms within the jewelery and corpus discipline. The selected works consist mainly, but not exclusively, of silver. The title SILVER LINING refers to the artists' brilliant works that point to future possibilities within their field.

“I believe that the jewelery and corpus genres have enormous artistic value and potential. With SPACIOUS COPENHAGEN, I am concerned with exploring their artistic space of possibility in a multidisciplinary landscape.” Annette Dam

2020:

Werke und Tage/Works and Days, at the Staatliche Antikensammlungen, contrasts contemporary Danish jewelry from the Danish Arts Foundation’s collection with ancient works of art from the Munich collections, linking together past and present and attesting to how the universal practice of adorning oneself has characterized humankind through every era. The Jewellery Collection of the Danish Arts Foundation carries a message on the democratization of art. Any Danish citizen may borrow a piece of jewelry from the collection if they have an active role in an official event. When they wear the jewelry, they not only adorn themselves with work by one of Denmark’s best jewelers; they convey art to everyone—in this case, even beyond Denmark’s borders. This exhibition’s dialogue between ancient jewelry and art jewelry breaks down boundaries of time and geography and helps to create new, powerful relationships. This is precisely the focal point for the Danish-German Cultural Friendship Year 2020, which anchors the show. Catalog courtesy of co-curators Florian Knauß and Mette Saabye and the Antikensammlung.
